Gold pins mark the general center of each public place or neighborhood. Red houses are homes added by their owners; most owners show only the street, and those pins are moved about 150 m so they never point at a house. Dates, hours and prices change every year — check the official site before you go.

Best Lit Home in Jacksonville 2026: neighbors vote with hearts

Add your home to the map and the hearts it collects are its votes. Anyone can give each home one heart per day. Voting closes December 25, 2026, 11:59 p.m. Eastern; we announce the winner here on December 26, 2026.

  • One home, one entry — submitted by someone who owns or lives at the home.
  • Homes in Duval, St. Johns and Clay counties; every entry is reviewed before it shows.
  • Pelican can decline or remove an entry, and checks hearts for fake votes.
Up to $1,500

The prize is a free seasonal installation in the 2027 season, worth up to $1,500 — our lights, design, install, service and January takedown. No cash value; it cannot be transferred or exchanged.

No purchase necessary. Full rules on the contest page.

Updated October 3, 2026 · Pelican Holiday Lights

Every December, a lot of Jacksonville goes looking for the same thing: somewhere to see good Christmas lights. The city doesn't have one giant display — it has a mix of ticketed events, free traditions, decorated neighborhoods and, an hour south, one of the best-known holiday light displays in the country. This map and guide cover the places Jacksonville families go back to year after year, with directions to each.

We install Christmas lights for a living, so we pay attention to who does it well — but we aren't affiliated with any of the events below. Dates, hours and ticket prices change every year, so for anything ticketed or scheduled, check the official website before you go.

The season, week by week

Dates change every year — confirm on the official site. This is the usual rhythm of a Northeast Florida holiday season.

Mid-November

St. Augustine's Light-Up! Night opens Nights of Lights — traditionally the Saturday before Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving week

Many homes light up for the holiday; the Light Boat Parade on the St. Johns River downtown is traditionally around Thanksgiving weekend.

Late November – December

The zoo's holiday light evenings (ZOOLights on the zoo's site) run on select nights; timed tickets.

Early December

Deck the Chairs on the Jacksonville Beach oceanfront; the Regatta of Lights on Matanzas Bay in St. Augustine is traditionally held in December.

Mid-December

Neighborhood displays at their peak — the best weeknights for a Riverside, San Marco or Mandarin drive.

Christmas week

The busiest nights everywhere; go early in the evening or on a weeknight.

January

Most home displays come down January 2–15; Nights of Lights stays on through the end of January.

Ticketed holiday light displays

Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens

The zoo's evening holiday light experience — called ZOOLights on the zoo's website — turns the gardens and paths into a walk-through light show on select evenings in the holiday season. It's one of the most popular family outings in the city, and evenings close to Christmas sell out. Tickets are usually timed, so buy online ahead and check the zoo's website for this year's name, dates and prices.

Drive-through and walk-through shows nearby

Drive-through light shows pop up in the region most years, at fairgrounds, farms and event venues, and they change from season to season. Search for this year's list and read recent reviews before you buy tickets; the good ones sell timed entry to avoid long lines.

Free holiday traditions

Jacksonville Light Boat Parade

Boats decorated in lights parade along the St. Johns River downtown, traditionally around Thanksgiving weekend, and the riverfront fills with families. The Riverwalks on both banks are the usual places to watch. Check the city's event calendar for the 2026 date and time.

Deck the Chairs at the beaches

On the Jacksonville Beach oceanfront, around the Seawalk Pavilion and Latham Plaza, lifeguard chairs are decorated with lights and themes each December by local businesses and groups. It's free, walkable and a good excuse for dinner at the beach. Check the event's site for the dates it runs.

Holiday events downtown and in the town squares

Downtown Jacksonville, San Marco Square, Riverside, Orange Park and the beach towns all hold tree lightings, holiday markets and parades in late November and December. Dates move every year — the local news "things to do this weekend" lists are the fastest way to find them.

Neighborhoods worth a slow drive

Some of the best Christmas lights in Jacksonville aren't events at all — they're whole streets of homeowners who go all-in. These are areas known for decorated homes and beautiful streets; specific houses change every year.

  • Riverside and Avondale. Historic bungalows and two-story homes with deep porches under huge live oaks. Porches and rails lit in warm white, wreaths on every door. See also Christmas lights in Riverside & Avondale.
  • San Marco. Across the river from downtown: older homes, tree-lined streets and the square itself decorated for the season.
  • Ortega. Riverfront historic homes and oak-canopy streets — quieter, and lovely at night.
  • Mandarin. Long ranch homes under live oaks and Spanish moss south of I-295; oak trunks wrapped in warm white are the local signature. Mandarin.
  • The St. Johns County suburbs. Nocatee, Fruit Cove and Julington Creek streets often light house after house, with palms along the drives.
  • The beaches. Raised cottages with lit stairs and decks, and palms wrapped a few blocks from the ocean.

Blackhawk Bluff and other big displays

Some displays grow big enough to draw crowds. The best known is Blackhawk Bluff, a neighborhood off Girvin Road on the Intracoastal side where residents have lit up together for more than 15 years; in recent seasons the Sheriff's Office has published a traffic plan for it. It's free — ignore anyone selling tickets — and it's on our map. For single homes, check our map's red house pins: those owners added their homes themselves and chose what to show. Remember these are people's homes: stay on the street and keep it quiet.

A day trip: St. Augustine Nights of Lights

About an hour south, St. Augustine's historic district is lit with millions of small white lights from late November through January. It's the most-searched holiday lights destination in Northeast Florida. Our St. Augustine Nights of Lights guide covers how to see it, parking and the best nights to go.

Tips for a Christmas lights drive

  1. Go on a weeknight. Weekends in mid-December are busiest everywhere.
  2. Start after 7 p.m. Most home displays are on timers from dusk; by 7 everything's lit.
  3. Drive slowly and don't block driveways. Pull over to look; these are residential streets.
  4. Switch to low beams on streets where people are walking — it helps everyone see the lights.
  5. Make a loop. Riverside and Avondale to San Marco and back is an easy evening.
