Govee permanent outdoor lights vs a professional install
DIY permanent light kits are everywhere. Here's an honest look at what you get, what the install really takes, and when a professional system is worth the difference.

Govee permanent outdoor lights are one of the most searched home-lighting products in Jacksonville — more searches every month than for any professional permanent brand. They belong to a growing category of DIY permanent light kits, along with products from other consumer smart-home brands: strings of app-controlled LED lights that a homeowner mounts under the eaves and leaves up all year.
They're a real option, and for some houses they're the right one. They're also a different product from a professionally installed permanent system. We're an independent installer and don't sell kits; here's the honest comparison so you can decide which fits your house.
What a DIY permanent light kit is
A boxed set of app-controlled LED lights in fixed lengths, with mounting clips or channels and a power adapter. You plan the layout, mount the lights along the eave, run the power to an outlet, and set it up in the app. Colors, scenes and schedules are controlled from your phone, much like a professional system.
DIY kit vs professional system
A kit costs less up front — you're paying for the product, not the labor. A professional system is about $25 to $45 per foot installed, because it includes design, the track, the install and a written warranty on the work.
With a kit, you do. Every foot of eave means time on a ladder, and two-story eaves are a real fall risk. With a professional install, the crew does.
Kits come in fixed lengths, so runs may stop short of a corner or leave extra to hide. A professional track is cut to your roof, corner to corner.
Kit lights usually mount as individual pods or clips under the eave. A professional track is a continuous channel matched to the fascia color, which hides wiring and reads as trim.
Kits plug into an outlet with an adapter you have to place and protect from weather. With a professional system, the controller is placed with you, and any new outlet or hard-wiring is done by a licensed electrician.
A kit is covered by the manufacturer's product warranty; the install is yours. A professional system comes with written warranty terms on the product and the labor, and someone to call.
Are DIY permanent lights hard to install?
On a single-story house with a simple, continuous eave and an outlet nearby, a handy homeowner can usually do it over a weekend. It gets harder fast with two stories, steep gables, many corners, tile roofs, or long runs far from an outlet. The hard part isn't the app — it's planning the runs, mounting straight and level from a ladder, and hiding the wires and the power adapter.
Florida-specific things to think about
- Sun. UV is hard on plastics and adhesives; check how the kit mounts and whether adhesive is meant for hot fascia.
- Salt air. Near the beaches, exposed connectors and adapters corrode. Keep every connection protected.
- Storms. Anything loose on the eave will rattle or come off in a strong wind. Mount at short intervals.
- HOA. Year-round exterior lights may need approval whether they're a kit or a pro system.
When a DIY kit makes sense
- Single-story house, simple eave, outlet nearby.
- You're comfortable and safe on a ladder.
- You want to try permanent lights on a budget before committing.
When a professional install makes sense
- Two-story eaves, high gables or a tile roof.
- You want the track hidden and matched to the trim.
- You want warranty on the work, not just the product.
- You'd rather not spend a weekend on a ladder.

Are Govee permanent lights hard to install?
On a simple single-story eave with an outlet nearby, many homeowners manage it in a weekend. Two-story eaves, many corners and tile roofs make it much harder and riskier.
Can I hire someone to install Govee permanent lights?
Some installers will mount kits customers bought. Call and ask — it depends on the kit and your roofline, and we'll tell you honestly whether it makes sense.
Is a professional permanent system worth more than a kit?
It is if you want a track cut to your roof and matched to the trim, written warranty on the work, and no ladder time. For a small single-story eave, a kit can be enough.
How much does a professional permanent install cost?
About $25 to $45 per foot installed in the Jacksonville area, $3,000 to $8,000 for a typical home.
