It's a reasonable worry. Your roof and gutters cost a lot more than a season of Christmas lights, and nobody wants a leak in February because of a December display. The honest answer: Christmas lights themselves are light and harmless; the damage comes from how they are hung. Here's what actually causes problems, and what a careful install looks like.

What really causes damage

  • Nails, screws and staples. The biggest one. Every hole in fascia, trim or shingles is a place for water to get in, and Florida rain finds it. Staples through a wire can also cut the insulation.
  • Forcing clips under shingles. Prying a shingle edge up too far can break the seal strip that holds it down in wind. A proper shingle clip slides under the edge without lifting it.
  • Walking on tile. Barrel and flat tile can crack under a boot in the wrong spot. Tile roofs need tile clips placed from a ladder or by someone who knows where to step.
  • Ladders leaning on gutters. A ladder resting on an aluminum gutter can dent or bend it. A ladder standoff, or leaning on the wall instead of the gutter, avoids it.
  • Yanking lights down in January. Pulling a strand off the roof instead of unclipping it can tear clips off and lift shingles.
  • Heavy runs on weak gutters. Rare with LED, but old, loose gutters can sag if a lot of weight is hung on one section.

Clips: the right one for each surface

Professional installs use plastic clips matched to the surface — no tools, no holes:

  • Gutter clips slide onto the front lip of the gutter.
  • Shingle tabs slip under the edge of an asphalt shingle without lifting it.
  • Tile clips hook under the edge of barrel or flat tile.
  • All-in-one clips handle both gutters and shingles on the same run.
  • Metal roofs get clips on the edge trim or magnets, never screws.

Gutter guards and pine needles

Gutter guards change where the clip goes — usually on the outer lip or the drip edge instead of inside the gutter. Gutters packed with pine needles or oak leaves are a different issue: clips sit crooked and debris can trap water. We clear the strip where the clips go before hanging; a full gutter cleaning is a separate job.

Historic and wood trim

On older homes — Riverside, Avondale, St. Augustine's historic streets — trim and porch woodwork deserve extra care. Clips and ties that hold without marking the paint, and never a nail or staple in historic wood.

What about the wiring?

Seasonal lights don't involve your home's wiring at all. They're plug-in commercial LED running from existing outdoor GFCI outlets on a timer. LED draws little power, so one outlet can often run a whole roofline. Permanent systems that need a new outlet or hard-wiring are a different job and should be done by a licensed electrician — we use a licensed electrician partner for that.

Takedown matters as much as install

Damage often happens in January, not November. A proper takedown unclips every run, removes every clip from the gutters and shingles and leaves nothing behind. That's included with our seasonal installs, between about January 2 and 15.

What about the roof itself?

Most rooflines can be lit entirely from a ladder at the eave, so nobody needs to walk on the roof. Ridges and high gables on two-story homes are the exception; those are reached carefully, in soft-soled shoes; we stay off wet roofs, and off tile wherever the edge can be reached from a ladder. If a roof is too steep, too fragile or too wet, the honest answer is to light what can be reached safely and leave the rest.

If something does go wrong

Ask any installer how they handle damage before you book. A professional, insured company should answer that question plainly. Before install day, it also helps to point out any loose gutters, cracked tiles or soft fascia you already know about — we'd rather know before we lean a ladder near it, and we'll tell you if a repair should come first.

How we hang lights

  • Clips only — no nails, screws or staples anywhere on the house.
  • Clips matched to gutters, shingles, tile or metal.
  • Ladders kept off the gutters.
  • Every clip removed at takedown.
  • Insured, professional installers on the ladders.
