Permanent lighting is the fastest-growing part of the holiday lighting business. In the Jacksonville area, more than half of all searches in this category are for permanent systems — "permanent Christmas lights," "permanent outdoor lighting" and brand names like Gemstone, JellyFish and Trimlight. Seasonal lights hung each year are still what most homes have. Both are good choices for different people. Here's how to decide.

What each one is

Seasonal lighting is the classic display: C9 bulbs on cut-to-length wire clipped along the gutters and roof edge, palm and tree wraps, a wreath on the door — installed in November and taken down in January. With a professional installer, the lights, service and takedown are included, and returning clients' lights are stored for next year.

Permanent lighting is a low-profile aluminum or vinyl track mounted under the roof edge, with individually addressable LEDs inside. It stays up year-round, is barely visible in daylight, and you control colors, patterns and schedules from an app.

Cost: one season vs many

Seasonal installation in Jacksonville runs about $5 to $8 per foot, typically $900 to $2,500 per season. Permanent lighting runs about $25 to $45 per foot, typically $3,000 to $8,000 once. The honest comparison is several seasons of seasonal installs against one permanent install. If you plan to stay in the house for years, and you'd use the lights for more than Christmas, permanent can come out ahead over time. If you might move, or you love the look of big classic bulbs and lit palms, seasonal makes more sense.

Looks

  • Seasonal gives you the big, warm, classic glow of C9 bulbs — and it can go anywhere: rooflines, palms, oaks, railings, wreaths.
  • Permanent gives a clean, continuous line under the roof edge, in any color, with patterns and animations. It doesn't wrap palms or dress the front door; many owners add a seasonal palm wrap and wreath on top of a permanent roofline.

Wiring and licensing

Seasonal displays are plug-in commercial LED running from your existing outdoor outlets on a timer, with no changes to your home's wiring — that's why no electrical license is involved. Permanent systems often plug into an existing outdoor GFCI outlet too; when a new outlet, a dedicated circuit or hard-wiring is needed, that part is electrical work and should be done by a licensed electrician. We use a licensed electrician partner for it.

HOAs and year-round lights

Most associations treat seasonal décor under holiday guidelines with set dates. A permanent track is a fixture on the house, so some HOAs want to see the product and color first. Ask before you buy; we can provide product details for your architectural review.

Maintenance and weather

Seasonal lights get a fresh check every year: every strand is tested and bad bulbs replaced before re-hanging. Permanent systems are sealed and mounted out of direct rain under the eave; ask any installer for written warranty terms on the LEDs, the controller and the labor. In both cases, salt air near the beaches is the hardest environment, which is why commercial-grade products matter.

Brand names

Gemstone, JellyFish and Trimlight are national brands of permanent lighting. We're an independent installer and not affiliated with or a dealer for them; we show you the product we install and its warranty before you decide.

How to decide in one minute

  • Staying 5+ years and want lights for more than December → look at permanent lighting.
  • Want lit palms, a classic big-bulb look, or not sure you'll stay → seasonal installation.
  • Want both → permanent roofline plus seasonal palms and entry.

Our cost calculator shows both side by side for your footage.
