Can You Put Christmas Lights on Palm Trees Safely?

Yes — you can put Christmas lights on palm trees safely, and in Jacksonville a lit palm is half the point of a Florida Christmas. Done well, a trunk wrap reads from the street as one glowing column. Done badly, it bunches at the bottom, runs out halfway up and leaves a cord across the lawn for the mower. Here is how to do it right, and when to call someone with taller ladders.
Is it bad for the palm?
Not if you use the right lights and take them off after the season. Modern LED runs cool, so the trunk doesn't heat up. The risks are mechanical: wire wrapped so tight it cuts into the trunk, staples or nails driven into the tree, and lights left up for years while the trunk grows. Wrap snug, never staple, and remove the lights in January.
Which lights to use
- Outdoor-rated LED only. Check the rating on the box; indoor strands don't belong outside in Florida dew and rain.
- Mini lights or C6 for trunks. Smaller bulbs at tight spacing make a smooth column; big C9s look better on rooflines.
- Enough length. Measure: trunk height times the number of turns. A spiral with 4–6 inches between turns on an average sabal palm takes a lot more wire than people expect.
- Warm white is the most popular look in Jacksonville; it matches roofline C9s and looks good under oaks.
How to wrap a trunk evenly
- Plug the strand in before you start so you know it works.
- Start at the base with the plug end, so the cord runs to your outlet without crossing the strand.
- Pick a spacing and keep it — a strip of tape on your glove or a measured stick helps.
- Wrap upward in a steady spiral, snug but not tight.
- Finish just under the crown and secure the end with a twist tie or a clip around the wire, not the tree.
Cords, water and the mower
Run cords along beds and edges, not across the lawn, and keep every connection off the ground on a stake or inside a cover. Plug into a GFCI outdoor outlet and put the display on a timer. If the outlet trips after rain, a wet connection is usually the cause.
Ladders and tall palms
Pygmy date and small sabal palms are an easy job from a step ladder. Tall Washingtonias and mature sabals are another story: leaning an extension ladder against a round trunk is how people get hurt. That's where a professional crew with the right ladders or a lift earns its price. Our palm wraps run $75 to $250 per tree, and very tall palms are quoted after we see them.
Taking it down
Unwrap from the top down, coil the strand as you go and label it by tree. Look for any spot where the wire marked the trunk and wrap that area looser next year. If we did the install, takedown is included in early January and returning clients' lights are stored for next season.
Palms are the Florida signature
A roofline is what people expect; lit palms are what people remember. If you'd rather not climb, see our palm tree lighting service, price your trees in the cost calculator, or read what installation costs in Jacksonville.
